At Mid Canterbury Hockey, we know that our junior coaches are the heart of our game. Every week you give up your time, energy, and enthusiasm to help our young players learn, grow, and most importantly, have fun. We truly appreciate everything you do for our hockey community. 💚
To support you in the fantastic work you're already doing, we've created this 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭. It's not about winning or losing—it's about creating positive experiences where every child feels included, valued, and excited to come back next week.
This simple checklist is designed as another tool in your coaching toolkit, helping ensure:
✅ Every player gets involved
✅ Everyone has opportunities to learn and try new things
✅ Positive behaviour and sportsmanship are encouraged
✅ Players leave the turf smiling and feeling successful
When everyone gets a go, everyone grows!
Thank you again to all our coaches for the incredible impact you have on our young players both on and off the turf. We couldn't do it without you. 👏

We would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐮𝐠𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫 Brophy Knight Limited for their continued support of Mid Canterbury Hockey.

What an absolute privilege it was to have 𝐁𝐞𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 officiating the Ian Smith Tournament Final on Sunday. Ben currently umpires at international level and was named New Zealand’s Male Umpire of the Year in 2025.
We were extremely lucky to have someone of Ben’s calibre here in Mid Canterbury, and even more special was the opportunity for some of our junior umpires to come along, watch the action, and learn from one of the very best in the game.
Opportunities like this are incredibly rare and hugely inspiring for our next generation of officials, so thanks Ben for taking the time to chat with our up and coming umpires and letting them pick your brain.
What an incredible weekend hosting the 2026 Ian Smith Tournament here in Mid Canterbury!
A huge thank you to all the players, officials, volunteers and supporters who helped make the tournament such a success. It was fantastic to see so many people down at the turf across the weekend, creating an awesome atmosphere and cheering on all four teams.
We are especially proud of our Mid Canterbury Men’s team, who put together an outstanding performance against Central Otago to take out the Final on Sunday 5-2 and be crowned the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐈𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬! 💛💚🏆
The support from the sidelines all weekend was unreal and our players certainly felt it. Hosting quality hockey on our new turf and seeing the community come together made for a very special weekend.
Congratulations also to the following Mid Canterbury players who were named in the Tournament Team (we are pretty sure that has got to be some kind of record!):
• Jacob Gray
• Ben Harford
• Michael Millar
• Matt Moore
• Sam Moore
• Rhys Ward
• Lucas Wood
