2021 Senior Competitions

Mid Canterbury Hockey is excited to announce a new structure for its men’s and women’s competitions in 2021.  The new structure will see the creation two divisions for both men and women.  This will mean the NBS Hockey Turf will see more action during the winter months.

“The establishment of this new structure is exciting for Mid Canterbury Hockey” says James Tavendale, Mid Canterbury Hockey President.  “Not only will Mid Canterbury’s best players be playing in Ashburton more often, we also expect to see many other positive outcomes for Hockey in Mid Canterbury.”

The new Division 1 men’s competition will be played on a Tuesday night, with the women’s Division 1 competition taking place on a Monday night.  The existing 1st Grade Men’s and Women’s competitions will be renamed Division 2 and will be played in their traditional time slots of Friday night (women) and Sunday afternoons (men).  Players from Year 9 up at high school will be eligible to play in the competitions.  The change means that Ashburton clubs will no longer participate in South Canterbury competitions.  Ashburton College will continue to participate in Canterbury Hockey’s secondary school competitions.

“Playing numbers in Mid Canterbury have increased to around 650 participants over the last few years. That’s the highest since we played on grass. After the turf was installed numbers dropped to the mid 400’s” said Tavendale.  “When Ashburton clubs first started playing in Timaru we had multiple senior teams for men and women travelling each week.  Over the years this has dropped away to only 1 Senior Men’s and 1 Senior Women’s team playing in the South Canterbury competition.  At the same time the numbers in our local competitions have been strong.  Taking these, and other relevant factors into account the Mid Canterbury Hockey executive determined now was the right time to consider, and now with the support of the clubs introduce a new competition structure.”

The new structure has been welcomed by clubs.  “Clubs have been part of this process and want to see the new structure succeed” said Club Liaison Officer of Mid Canterbury Hockey Jen Muir. Clubs see more opportunity for their players and umpires and a more local feel to Hockey in Ashburton. “Both sporting wise and socially this will create more opportunity and the cost of travelling will be greatly reduced” Muir said.

In addition to traditional provincial tournaments Mid Canterbury Hockey are working on securing representative ties and other opportunities to provide the province’s elite senior men’s and women’s players games at a higher level.
